Author Guidelines
The Journal of Applied Health Sciences and Medicine (JAHSM), ISSN 2583-1887, publishes original and high-quality scholarly work in medical, health, biomedical, public health, allied health, and related sciences.
Article Types
The journal considers Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Brief Reports, Short Communications, Case Reports, Case Series, Technical or Methodological Articles, Letters to the Editor, Editorials, Commentaries, and Perspectives, as appropriate to the journal's scope.
Initial Submission: Free Format
JAHSM accepts free-format initial submissions. Authors are not required to use a specific journal template, reference style, typesetting format, or LaTeX format at the initial submission stage.
The manuscript must nevertheless be clear, complete, readable, and suitable for editorial assessment and peer review. Authors should provide, as applicable, the title, author information, abstract, keywords, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, references, tables, figures, funding information, author contributions, conflict of interest statement, and ethical statements.
Originality and Exclusive Submission
- The manuscript must be original and must not have been published previously.
- The manuscript must not be under consideration by another journal at the same time.
- Authors must disclose relevant prior dissemination, including preprints, conference presentations, conference proceedings, theses, dissertations, datasets, and closely related publications.
- Any substantial overlap with previously published, submitted, or publicly available work must be disclosed to the editor.
- Authors must obtain appropriate permission for copyrighted third-party material where required.
Authorship and Contributorship
Authorship must accurately reflect meaningful contributions to the research and manuscript. For medical and health-related research, authors are encouraged to follow the authorship principles of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
All listed authors should have made a meaningful contribution to the work, participated sufficiently to take responsibility for appropriate aspects of the work, approved the final version, agreed to submission and publication, and accepted responsibility for addressing questions concerning the accuracy or integrity of the work.
Guest, gift, and ghost authorship are not acceptable. Individuals who contributed to the work but do not qualify for authorship may be acknowledged with their permission.
Changes to Authorship
Requests to add, remove, or rearrange authors should normally be made before acceptance and must include a clear explanation and appropriate confirmation from the affected authors and, where applicable, all listed authors. Post-acceptance authorship changes may require additional documentation and may result in publication of an appropriate correction.
Research Involving Human Participants
Research involving human participants, human biological materials, identifiable information, medical records, or other human-derived data must comply with applicable ethical, institutional, national, and international requirements.
For medical research involving human participants, authors should follow the principles of the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki (2024), where applicable.
Where ethical review is required, approval must be obtained from an appropriate research ethics committee, institutional review board, or equivalent competent authority before the research is conducted.
The manuscript should identify the ethics committee or institutional review board, approval or reference number, and ethical approval or exemption status, where applicable. The journal may request supporting documentation when necessary.
Retrospective and Secondary-Use Research
Retrospective studies, medical-record studies, registry studies, database analyses, secondary analyses, biobank studies, and research using previously collected human data must comply with applicable ethical, privacy, institutional, and legal requirements.
Where ethical approval or exemption is applicable, the manuscript should provide the relevant statement. Where informed consent was not obtained, authors should provide an appropriate ethical justification or exemption where required.
Human Biological Materials
Research involving human tissues, cells, organs, biological samples, or other human-derived materials must comply with applicable ethical and regulatory requirements. Where applicable, authors should report the source of the material, ethical approval, consent requirements, institutional permissions, and safeguards for donor privacy and confidentiality.
Informed Consent and Patient Privacy
Appropriate informed consent must be obtained where required by applicable ethical standards, institutional requirements, or regulations.
For case reports, case series, clinical images, photographs, videos, interviews, or other publications containing potentially identifiable patient information, appropriate consent for publication must be obtained where required.
Authors must protect patient privacy and must not publish unnecessary identifying information such as names, addresses, identification numbers, medical record numbers, or other information that could reasonably identify an individual.
Clinical Trial Registration
Clinical trials involving human participants should be prospectively registered in an appropriate publicly accessible clinical trial registry before recruitment of the first participant where required.
The manuscript should report the registry name and trial registration number. Authors should follow the ICMJE clinical trial registration recommendations.
Animal Research
Research involving animals must comply with applicable institutional, national, and international requirements for animal care and welfare. Where required, ethical approval must be obtained before the research is conducted.
Authors should report the approving ethics committee or authority, approval or reference number where applicable, relevant animal-welfare procedures, and measures taken to minimize pain, suffering, distress, or unnecessary use of animals.
Authors should follow the ARRIVE Guidelines where applicable.
Reporting Guidelines
Authors should follow recognized reporting guidelines appropriate to the study design and article type. Relevant guidelines may include:
- CONSORT – randomized controlled trials
- STROBE – observational studies
- PRISMA – systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- CARE – case reports
- STARD – diagnostic accuracy studies
- ARRIVE – animal research
- COREQ / SRQR – qualitative research
- SQUIRE – quality improvement studies
- CHEERS – health economic evaluations
- EQUATOR Network – database of health-research reporting guidelines
Authors should select the reporting guideline appropriate to their study rather than applying every guideline to every manuscript. Completed reporting checklists may be requested or submitted as supplementary material where appropriate.
Sex and Gender Reporting
Where relevant to the research, authors are encouraged to consider and report sex and gender-related factors transparently and to distinguish between sex and gender in study design, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
Authors may consult the EQUATOR Network for applicable sex- and gender-reporting guidance, including SAGER where appropriate.
Funding and Sponsor Role
All sources of financial support for the research or manuscript preparation must be disclosed.
Where applicable, authors should describe the role of the funding organization or sponsor in study design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, manuscript preparation, and the decision to submit or publish the work.
Conflicts of Interest
Authors must disclose actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest that could reasonably influence or appear to influence the research, interpretation, or publication process.
Where no relevant conflict exists, authors may provide an appropriate statement such as: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.
Data Availability and Research Transparency
Authors should provide a Data Availability Statement where applicable. Supporting data should be made available when ethically, legally, and practically possible.
The statement should indicate whether supporting data are publicly available, available through a recognized repository, available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request, or unavailable because of ethical, privacy, legal, confidentiality, or other legitimate restrictions.
Image and Clinical Image Integrity
Clinical photographs, radiographs, microscopy images, pathology images, figures, charts, and other visual materials must accurately represent the underlying clinical or research information.
Authors must not manipulate images in a manner that misrepresents the original information. Any permitted image processing should be applied consistently and disclosed where appropriate. Identifiable patient images must comply with applicable consent and privacy requirements.
Plagiarism and Publication Misconduct
The journal does not accept plagiarism, inappropriate text reuse, fabrication, falsification, duplicate or redundant publication, simultaneous submission, inappropriate image manipulation, authorship manipulation, peer-review manipulation, or other research or publication misconduct.
Manuscripts may be screened using similarity-detection or other appropriate research-integrity tools. Similarity results are considered together with editorial assessment and do not alone establish misconduct.
Artificial Intelligence
Authors may use AI-assisted tools responsibly, but authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, citations, interpretation, and ethical compliance of their manuscript.
AI tools must not be listed as authors and must not be used to fabricate or falsify data, results, references, citations, images, patient information, or other scholarly content.
Where substantial AI assistance has been used in manuscript preparation, authors should disclose the tool and the general nature or purpose of the assistance in accordance with the ICMJE Recommendations on AI in Publishing.
References
References must be accurate, complete, and consistently presented. JAHSM recommends a numbered citation system. A specific journal-formatted reference style is not required for initial submission.
Peer Review
JAHSM uses a single-blind peer-review process. Reviewers remain anonymous to authors. Primary research articles are subject to external peer review as appropriate to the article type.
Post-Acceptance Production File
After acceptance, authors must provide a final, revised, editable manuscript file in Microsoft Word or LaTeX format, incorporating all approved corrections and editorial revisions.
Authors may prepare the final publication-ready file themselves. Alternatively, authors may request the journal's optional Publication Production and Technical Service for technical layout and formatting assistance at a charge of USD 50 per manuscript. This charge is additional to the applicable Article Processing Charge (APC) and is not required for publication.
